Gas Grill OEM Sourcing Guide: China
Gas grill procurement is regulated procurement. A charcoal grill that fails a drop test is a returns problem; a gas grill with a leaking regulator is a liability problem. TEKL has built portable propane, two-burner, flat-top griddle and built-in gas units in Xiamen since 2006, and every gas project starts with the destination market rather than the price. This guide covers the specification points that decide whether a gas grill passes certification the first time — plus the cost trade-offs buyers usually discover too late.
| Typical MOQ | 200 pcs per SKU (gas certification cost per model) |
| Sample lead time | 10–20 days, longer if a new burner or manifold is needed |
| Production lead time | 40–50 days after sample approval |
| Body steel | 0.8–1.2 mm; stainless 430 or 304 on premium lines |
| Certification | CSA/ANSI Z21.58 (US/CA), EN 498 (EU), AS 5263 (AU) |
1. Format selection by channel
Portable propane and tabletop
The largest volume category worldwide. 1–2 burners, 3–10 kW, often with a folding lid and carry handle. The commercial battleground is burner life and regulator consistency, not the shell. Our portable propane mini grill is the reference build.
Two-burner and three-burner cart grills
Family retail. Buyers expect independent burner control, a side shelf and a warming rack. Flame tameability at low output matters more than maximum heat — a burner that cannot hold a simmer will generate bad reviews.
Flat-top griddles
Commercial kitchens, food trucks and outdoor kitchens. Specification shifts to plate thickness (6–10 mm), heat distribution and grease management. The folding flat-top gas grill shows the portable variant of this format.
Built-in and outdoor kitchen modules
Higher unit value, lower volume. Cut-out dimensions, fascia finish and the ability to be serviced in place become the deciding factors. Buyers in this tier reject a unit that can only be repaired by removing it from the counter.
2. The gas train is where quality is won or lost
Burner material. Aluminised steel is the volume option and lasts 3–5 seasons. Cast iron holds heat better and is the premium choice. Cheap stamped steel burners with thin walls are the number-one early-failure component in consumer gas grills.
Manifold and valves. Valves must be calibrated per market — US and Canada run different orifice sizes than Europe, and a manifold built for the wrong gas type will fail certification immediately.
Regulator and hose. Specify the regulator standard for the destination: QCC-1 for the US, and the relevant national standard in the EU and Australia. This is the component that creates liability, not the shell.
Ignition. Piezo is cheap and reliable but wears. Battery electronic ignition is what retail expects above a certain price point. Specify which, and specify the IP rating if the unit lives outdoors.
Leak testing. Every unit should be leak-tested at the manifold and regulator connection before packing, with the test pressure stated in the QC record.
3. Market certification matrix
| Market | Standard | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| USA / Canada | ANSI Z21.58 / CSA 1.6 | Certification is per model and per gas type. A new burner or manifold requires a new file. |
| European Union | EN 498, plus GAR if applicable | CE marking and a technical file are the factory's responsibility; keep the declaration with the shipment. |
| United Kingdom | EN 498 as retained, UKCA | UKCA marking since 2021 for most gas appliances. |
| Australia / NZ | AS 5263 / AS/NZS 5601 | AGA or IAPMO registration is required before retail listing. |
Budget certification as a fixed cost per model, not per unit. That is why gas grills have a higher minimum order quantity than charcoal: the file has to be paid for, and it only makes sense across a few hundred units.
4. Stainless: three grades, three prices, one honest conversation
430 stainless is magnetic, resists rust reasonably and is the volume choice for exterior panels. 304 is the food-grade standard and costs noticeably more. 201 is cheaper than 430 and will show surface rust in coastal or humid climates within a season. Ask which grade is used on which component — many quotes say "stainless steel" while using 430 on the body and 201 on the firebox. Specify grade per component in the RFQ and require it on the inspection report.
5. Sample and pre-production checks
Leak test at every joint with soap solution at rated pressure, recorded on video.
Low-flame test. Turn all burners to minimum and confirm the flame stays lit and stable for 15 minutes.
Heat distribution. Measure at four corners of the cooking surface at 10 and 20 minutes; a spread above 40 °C needs a baffle or burner repositioning.
Ignition cycle. 50 consecutive starts, count failures. Above two failures the electrode gap is wrong.
Drop and tip test on the packed carton, then re-run the leak test — this catches regulator damage in transit.
6. Mistakes that cost buyers entire shipments
Assuming certification transfers. A file for a two-burner does not cover a three-burner. Ordering one gas type for multiple markets. Orifice and regulator differences are not cosmetic. Buying uncoated fasteners. The gas train is fine; the cart rusts apart around it. Ignoring the manual. Retailers in the US and EU require market-specific manuals and safety labels in the box — a shipment without them can be refused. Underestimating tooling for the lid. A press-formed lid with a rolled edge needs its own die; quoting without it produces a wavy lid that fails visual inspection.
Frequently asked questions
What certification is required to sell a gas grill in the United States?
Gas grills are certified to ANSI Z21.58 / CSA 1.6, and the file must name the specific model. Retailers will ask for the CSA or ETL mark before listing. Certification is per model and per gas type, so a new burner configuration requires a new file.
What is the minimum order quantity for a branded gas grill?
Typically 200 pcs per SKU, because gas certification carries a fixed cost per model. Mixed containers with several compatible models are standard and let you reach volume without committing to a single SKU.
Which stainless grade should I specify?
430 for exterior panels in most climates, 304 for food-contact surfaces and coastal markets. Avoid 201 for anything exposed — it shows surface rust within a season in humid or coastal conditions.
Can you produce propane and natural gas versions of the same model?
Yes, but they are separate certifications with different orifices and regulators. Plan them as two models from the start rather than converting a propane unit later.
How long does gas grill production take?
Allow 10–20 days for a sample, including leak and ignition testing, then 40–50 days for production after approval. Certification testing adds 3–6 weeks if a new file is needed, so start that process in parallel with sampling.
