Fire Pit OEM Sourcing Guide: China
Fire pits look simple and are surprisingly easy to get wrong. A fire pit runs hotter than any grill — 600 to 800 °C at the bowl — so the same 0.8 mm steel and standard powder coat that works on a charcoal grill will warp and chalk within one season. TEKL has manufactured wood-burning, smokeless, brazier and fire-pit-grill combos in Xiamen since 2006. This guide covers the material, coating and combustion specifications that separate a fire pit that survives three winters from one that comes back as a return.
| Typical MOQ | 100–300 pcs per SKU |
| Sample lead time | 7–12 days |
| Production lead time | 35–45 days after sample approval |
| Bowl steel | 2.0–3.0 mm (not 0.8 mm — this is the most common error) |
| Coating | High-temperature coating rated 600 °C+, or bare weathering steel |
1. Fire pit formats
Wood-burning bowl and brazier
Garden retail, hospitality and landscaping. The bowl profile determines burn efficiency: a shallow bowl radiates well but throws sparks, a deep bowl contains embers but smokes more. Our round wood-burning fire pit is the standard garden build; the brazier bowl is the hospitality variant.
Smokeless (secondary combustion) fire pits
Premium retail, urban gardens and terraces where neighbours matter. The mechanism is a double wall with air holes at the base: preheated air enters above the fire and burns off the smoke. It works, but only if the hole pattern and wall gap are correct — a copy with the holes in the wrong position simply burns badly. Our portable smokeless fire pit is built to this principle.
Folding and portable
Camping and RV channels. Hinged panels and a carry bag; the weak point is the hinge and the panel edge. Ask for a 50-cycle fold test and an edge-rolling specification, because sharp folded edges are a documented injury risk in this category.
Fire pit and grill combos
Dual-use products that need a swing or drop-in grate and a defined cooking height. The specification problem is that a fire pit wants 700 °C and a cooking grate wants 250 °C at the food — which means the grate has to be adjustable. Our fire pit grill combo addresses this with an adjustable grate height.
2. Material and coating: the whole game
Bowl thickness. 2.0 mm minimum for a wood fire, 3.0 mm for commercial or high-use units. Anything thinner warps into a bowl that no longer sits flat.
Steel type. Cold-rolled steel with a high-temperature coating is the volume choice. Weathering steel (Corten-type) is the premium choice — it forms a stable oxide layer and needs no coating, which removes an entire failure mode. Stainless is used for coastal markets and for gas fire pits.
Coating. Standard powder coat is rated around 200 °C and will fail on a fire pit. Specify a high-temperature coating rated 600 °C or above, applied after a proper pretreatment. Ask for the coating datasheet, not just the colour chip.
Legs and base. Legs must be welded, not riveted, and must lift the bowl at least 60 mm off the surface. Airflow under the bowl is what stops patio damage.
Sparks and embers. A spark screen or lid is not optional for retail in dry-climate markets, and it is increasingly required by insurers for hospitality installations.
3. Safety and documentation
| Market | What applies | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | No product-specific harmonised standard; general product safety regulation applies | Risk assessment, material declarations, coating temperature rating, instructions in the destination language |
| United States | No federal standard; retailer and state requirements apply | CPSIA compliance statement, Prop 65 warning, burn-hazard labelling |
| Australia | General consumer safety plus state fire regulations for outdoor burning | Instructions referencing local fire restrictions, heat-resistant packaging |
Because there is no dedicated standard, the documentation burden falls on the risk assessment. Buyers who skip it end up with a retailer asking for a burn-hazard statement two weeks before the shipping date.
4. Testing you should require
High-temperature burn test. Run a full load of wood for three hours and inspect the coating for blistering, the bowl for warping, and the legs for deflection.
Thermal cycling. Five heat-and-cool cycles, then measure bowl flatness. More than 3 mm of warp on a 600 mm bowl is a reject.
Salt spray at 96 hours on the coated surface, and 48 hours on any bare or welded area.
Fold cycle test for portable units — 50 cycles then check hinge play and edge condition.
Drop test on the packed carton, then re-check bowl flatness and leg welds.
5. Cost levers that do not hurt the product
One bowl diameter, three configurations. A 600 mm bowl can ship as a plain fire pit, a smokeless version with an inner wall, or a grill combo with a grate — three SKUs from one pressing tool. Standardise the leg. One leg pressing shared across diameters saves tooling without changing appearance. Offer bare weathering steel as a premium finish. It removes the coating line cost entirely and is genuinely better for the application. Pack smarter, not thinner. A well-designed carton with corner protection costs less than the damage it prevents.
Frequently asked questions
What steel thickness should a wood-burning fire pit use?
2.0 mm minimum for the bowl, 3.0 mm for commercial or heavy-use units. Thinner steel warps at fire temperature and the bowl will no longer sit flat on a patio after a few burns.
How does a smokeless fire pit actually work?
A double wall with air inlets at the base preheats air and feeds it above the fire, which burns off the smoke. It only works if the hole pattern and the wall gap are engineered — incorrect copies simply burn badly and smoke more.
What coating is needed for a fire pit?
A high-temperature coating rated 600 °C or above, applied after proper pretreatment. Standard powder coat rated around 200 °C will blister and chalk on a fire pit. Weathering steel is a coating-free alternative for premium lines.
What is the minimum order quantity for a custom fire pit?
100 pcs per SKU for an existing bowl size with custom colour or logo, 300 pcs where a new pressing tool is required. One bowl tool can usually support several configurations, which lowers the effective minimum.
Do fire pits need certification?
There is no dedicated harmonised standard in most markets, so compliance rests on a documented risk assessment plus CPSIA and Prop 65 statements for the US. Burn-hazard labelling and market-specific instructions are expected by retailers.
