Camping Stove OEM Sourcing Guide: China
Camping stoves and tent stoves are bought on two numbers: packed weight and burn time. Everything else — finish, folding mechanism, carry bag — is secondary until the product fails in the field, at which point it becomes the only thing that matters. TEKL has manufactured titanium and stainless wood-burning tent stoves, portable two-burner gas stoves and folding campfire kits in Xiamen since 2006, exporting to North America, Europe and Australia. This guide covers the specification points that decide weight, durability and — for tent stoves — whether the product is safe to put inside a shelter.
| Typical MOQ | 100–300 pcs per SKU |
| Sample lead time | 7–15 days |
| Production lead time | 35–45 days after sample approval |
| Tent stove steel | 0.3–0.5 mm titanium, 0.4–0.6 mm stainless |
| Critical spec | Flue diameter and damper fit |
1. Product types and the buyers behind them
Wood-burning tent stoves
Winter camping, hunting, hot tenting and glamping. The buying decision is almost entirely weight versus durability: titanium is roughly 40% lighter than stainless at the same thickness and resists corrosion completely, but costs two to three times more and is harder to weld. Our ultralight titanium tent stove targets the backpacking end; the three-window tent stove targets glamping and base-camp use.
Portable gas camping stoves
Volume retail. One or two burners, a folding body and a windshield. Certification is the entry ticket, and the failure mode is always the same: a burner that will not hold a low flame in wind. The two-burner gas camping stove is the standard build.
Folding campfire grills and tool sets
Camping retail and gifting. Compactness and the quality of the hinge matter more than the cooking surface. The folding campfire grill kit is representative of the format.
Accessories: spark arrestors, flue sections, water-heater coils
High-margin add-ons that increase average order value and reduce returns, because buyers who can extend the flue or add a spark arrestor keep using the stove in more situations.
2. Material choices and what they cost
| Material | Weight | Durability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titanium 0.3–0.5 mm | Lowest | Excellent corrosion, harder to weld | Ultralight backpacking, premium price points |
| Stainless 304, 0.4–0.6 mm | Moderate | Good, discolours with heat | Mainstream camping, value tiers |
| Cold-rolled steel with high-temp coating | Highest | Coating dependent | Car camping, glamping, low price points |
| Aluminised steel | Moderate | Good heat reflection, edge care needed | Mid-tier stoves |
A common cost mistake is mixing materials within one product to hit a price — a titanium body with a stainless door saves money and creates a thermal expansion mismatch that shows up as a warped door after a dozen burns. Specify one material family per stove.
3. Tent stove safety: the part that is not negotiable
Carbon monoxide. Every wood-burning stove sold for use inside a shelter needs a CO warning in the manual and on the product, in the destination language. This is the single largest liability exposure in the category.
Flue and damper. Flue sections must fit with a defined clearance — loose joints leak smoke into the tent at exactly the moment the user closes the damper. Specify a friction-fit tolerance and test it.
Stability. Legs must not collapse when the stove is loaded and knocked. Test with a full fuel load plus a lateral push.
Surface temperature. A tent stove glows. Clearance-to-combustibles distances must be in the manual and on a label, and they must be measured, not estimated.
Spark arrestor. Required or expected in most forest services; supply it as standard where the market demands it.
4. Gas camping stoves: certification is the gate
Portable gas stoves fall under EN 521 in Europe, ANSI Z21.72 / CSA 11.2 in North America and AS 2658 in Australia. The regulator, hose and burner are certified as a system, so a change of burner or regulator means a new file. Budget certification per model, and plan the minimum order quantity around it — usually 300 pcs. Also specify the valve type: a screw-on valve for the local cartridge standard, or a hose and regulator for refillable cylinders, since the two are not interchangeable across markets.
5. Sample validation
Weigh it. Compare the actual packed weight against the specification, including the bag and flue. Weight claims are the most common source of returns in this category.
Assemble it blind. Time a first-time assembly from the manual only. Over 10 minutes for a tent stove means the manual or the design needs work.
Burn test. Two hours at full load, then inspect for warping, discolouration and joint integrity. Repeat three times.
Flue leak test. Smoke test with the damper closed; any visible leak at a joint is a reject.
Fold cycle 50 times for hinged bodies, then check hinge play and panel flatness.
Drop test on the packed carton, then re-check the flue fit and leg locks.
Frequently asked questions
Is titanium worth it for a tent stove?
Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than stainless at the same thickness and does not corrode, which is why it dominates the ultralight segment. It costs two to three times more and is harder to weld, so it makes sense above a certain retail price point rather than for entry-level lines.
What is the minimum order quantity for a custom camping stove?
100 pcs per SKU for an existing model with custom colour or logo, and around 300 pcs for gas stoves where certification must be renewed per model. Mixed containers across several models reduce the per-SKU commitment.
What certification do portable gas camping stoves require?
EN 521 in Europe, ANSI Z21.72 / CSA 11.2 in North America and AS 2658 in Australia. The regulator, hose and burner are certified as a system, so changing any of them requires a new certification file.
Can you supply flue sections and spark arrestors as accessories?
Yes. Flue extensions, elbows, spark arrestors and water-heater coils are available as accessories, which increases average order value and reduces returns because buyers can adapt the stove to more situations.
How is a tent stove packed for export?
Flat-packed panels with edge protection, flue sections bundled separately, and a carry bag inside the carton. Drop testing to the channel's requirement is standard, and packed weight is verified per carton before shipment.
