Drinkware OEM Sourcing Guide: China
Reusable drinkware is bought on three things: material story, print quality and cost per unit at volume. The category is driven by corporate gifting, promotional programmes and retail eco-lines, and the failure modes are specific — leaking lids, print that washes off, and aluminium cups that taste of metal because the interior was never properly coated. TEKL manufactures anodised aluminium and stainless drinkware in Xiamen alongside its barbecue lines. This guide covers material selection, food-contact requirements and the print methods that survive a dishwasher.

| Production lead time | 25–35 days after artwork approval |
| Capacity range | 270 ml – 500 ml for cups and mugs |

1. Material choice decides the price and the claim
Anodised aluminium
Light, cheap to tool, excellent for full-wrap print and the most common choice for promotional cups at 270–400 ml. The interior must be food-safe coated or anodised to a sealed finish; unsealed aluminium imparts a metallic taste and fails migration testing. Our 270 ml all-aluminium cup is the reference format for this tier.
Stainless steel 304
Double-wall vacuum versions hold temperature and command a retail price three to five times higher than single-wall aluminium. Heavier, better for retail than for bulk gifting.
Recycled and single-material construction
The strongest sustainability claim available, and the one most often made without evidence. A single-material cup with a recyclable lid is a defensible claim; a multi-material cup with glued seams is not. If the product is going into an eco-positioned retail line, document the material composition and recyclability per component, because the retailer's compliance team will ask.
2. Print methods and what survives washing
| Method | Durability | Best for | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pad print | Good, 1–3 colours | Logo on one or two sides | 500 pcs |
| Silk screen | Good, solid colours | Simple logos, high volume | 1,000 pcs |
| Heat transfer / sublimation | Moderate on curved aluminium | Full-colour artwork | 1,000 pcs |
| Laser engraving | Permanent on anodised surface | Premium corporate gifting | 500 pcs |
| Water transfer | Moderate, needs topcoat | Complex multi-colour designs | 1,000 pcs |
Dishwasher resistance is the specification that separates a good print from a bad one. Ask for a dishwasher cycle test — typically 50 cycles — and specify the topcoat if the product is sold into retail rather than as a one-off promotional item. Promotional buyers accept lower durability because the cup has a campaign life; retail buyers do not.
3. Food contact and compliance
Interior coating or anodising. Must be food-contact approved and migration tested. This is the single most common compliance gap in aluminium drinkware.
Lid and seal materials. Silicone gaskets need FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB reports; PP lids need food-contact declaration and a BPA-free statement.
Leak test. Every travel-style lid should be leak tested — fill, close, invert for 30 minutes. A leaking lid is the number one return reason in the category.
Capacity tolerance. Declared capacity should be measured, not nominal. A 270 ml cup that holds 245 ml is a misdescription in most markets.
Labelling. Country of origin, material, and care instructions; EU/UK importers require an address on the label.
4. Cost structure: where the money goes
For a 270 ml single-wall aluminium cup, the body is a small share of the cost. The variables that move the price are: interior coating quality, print method and coverage, lid complexity, and packaging. Two levers matter most. First, print coverage — a one-colour logo on one side versus a full wrap is a meaningful percentage of unit cost at this price point. Second, carton design — drinkware is bulky, so nesting and carton dimension optimisation usually saves more than a price negotiation. If the programme is a corporate gift, the presentation box often costs more than the print and should be specified early.
5. Sample validation
Migration and taste test on the interior finish — fill with hot water, hold 30 minutes, check for odour and taste.
Print adhesion — cross-hatch tape test, then dishwasher cycles if retail-grade durability is claimed.
Leak test on every lid design, inverted for 30 minutes.
Capacity measurement against the declared figure.
Drop test from 1 m onto a hard surface for retail SKUs, and note whether the lid stays closed.
Carton drop test — dents on aluminium show up immediately and are not repairable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order quantity for custom printed drinkware?
500 pcs for pad print or laser engraving, and 1,000 pcs for full-colour sublimation or water transfer. Minimums are driven by print setup rather than by the cup itself, so combining several designs in one order reduces the effective cost per design.
Is aluminium drinkware food safe?
Yes, provided the interior is food-contact coated or sealed anodised and has a migration test report. Unsealed aluminium can impart a metallic taste and will fail food-contact requirements in the EU and US.
How durable is the print on a reusable cup?
Pad print and laser engraving hold up well; sublimation on curved aluminium is more sensitive to dishwasher cycles. For retail, specify a topcoat and ask for a 50-cycle dishwasher test report. For promotional campaigns, standard print is usually sufficient.
Can you supply recycled or single-material drinkware?
Yes, and single-material construction with a recyclable lid is the version that supports a defensible sustainability claim. Material composition and recyclability should be documented per component if the product goes into an eco-positioned retail line.
How long does a printed drinkware order take?
5–10 days for a blank sample, about 7 more days for a printed sample, then 25–35 days for production after artwork approval. Presentation packaging adds its own tooling time and should be specified at the start.
